Home Care Providers - Elder Caregiver Daily
As a company and as individuals, we have been able to grow and learn what is important to the older people that we provide services to. This has happened by being a part of the experience of the day to day issues that they face. We better understand the isolation that comes from having to “give up driving”, lose your hearing or vision, become forgetful, exist on medications, and the difficulty of “keeping up” and understanding the fast paced world that has developed around them.
Home caregiving is a “family” experience. That does not mean that only family members can provide it, it means that caregivers tend to become like family – even if they are not related.
It is also not something that necessarily comes easily amidst the other family activities that vie for our attention. The whole “sandwich and club sandwich” generation is growing more everyday. Many families continuously struggle to find the ability to balance work, children, grandchildren, activities, housekeeping, cooking, and play. Add to this the responsibilities of eldercare for parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and so on, medical appointments, prescriptions, and the inevitable health crises that come up. Each crisis more devastating and difficult to rebound from than the last.
I have often felt that medically – our society does a very good job of keeping people alive longer than ever before. Sometimes this is a good thing -- and sometimes we wonder at the quality of life being preserved. My dad used to say he did not want to be kept alive on any “machines”. “If my time comes – it comes.” I was able to see so much through his eyes. I also learned how much better we have to become as a society in respecting and learning from the “greatest generation” and what they are facing -- and how to prepare for our own aging in place.
